Dr. Thomas (Tom) Minckley is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, focusing on arid and semi-arid ecosystems of western North America. His work integrates long-term ecological history (spanning thousands of years) to address modern conservation challenges, including biodiversity loss and ecosystem reorganization due to climate stressors like drought and fire.
- Education: Ph.D. (2003), M.A. (1999) from University of Oregon; B.S. (1996) from University of Arizona; B.S. (1987) from University of Northern Arizona.
Dr. Minckley's research explores:
- Resilience of arid ecosystems to environmental disturbance
- Fire propagation modeling and risk mitigation
- Spatial-temporal patterns of Holocene biodiversity
- Conservation history of desert wetlands
- Paleoecological perspectives on climate change vulnerability
- Landscape dynamics of the last glacial period
Recent publications highlight his work on Pleistocene ecosystem responses, fire history analysis, vegetation dynamics, and DNA-based biodiversity assessments. His research spans diverse regions including the Bighorn Basin, Intermountain West, Chihuahuan Desert, and Sundarbans mangroves.
Dr. Minckley teaches courses on biogeography, fire ecology, conservation of natural resources, and quaternary ecology, emphasizing student-centered, research-driven learning approaches.
