Thomas McGee is an interdisciplinary researcher at the European University Institute, holding a Max Weber Fellowship with the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. His research focuses on the intersection of legal and social studies of the Middle East, particularly Syria, Kurdish dynamics, and the wider Levant region.
Dr. McGee received his PhD from Melbourne Law School with a dissertation titled "Syria's Changing Statelessness Landscape: 2011 as Critical Juncture." He also holds an MA in Kurdish Studies from the University of Exeter and a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages from the University of Cambridge. In 2024, he was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford's Refugee Studies Centre.
His research interests span migration and citizenship, statelessness, citizenship law, conflict and peace, Kurdish studies, international refugee law, and international human rights law, with a regional focus on Syria and the Middle East and North Africa. Dr. McGee speaks Arabic and Kurdish and has extensive field experience, having worked for a decade as an analyst and advisor for humanitarian and development programs in Syria.
During his Max Weber fellowship, Dr. McGee is preparing his PhD for publication as a book, theorizing the legal landscape and exploring legal reform dynamics in Syria, and developing a case law database related to statelessness and nationality issues in the Middle East and North Africa.
His academic work has been published in leading journals including the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, International Migration Review, Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, Citizenship Studies, Genocide Studies International, Statelessness & Citizenship Review, and Kurdish Studies Journal.
Dr. McGee is mentored by Maarten Vink and his work contributes significantly to understanding the complex legal and social dynamics of statelessness and migration in conflict-affected regions.
