Marika Sosnowski is a Research Fellow at the Melbourne Law School (The University of Melbourne) and a Research Associate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg. Her work bridges socio-political-legal anthropology, focusing on critical security studies, ceasefire dynamics, and legal systems in conflict zones, with a geographic emphasis on Syria.
Her current postdoctoral project at the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness examines the legal aftermath of war and revolution, exploring how populations internalize and navigate legal frameworks post-mass violence. She holds an Australian legal qualification and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals including Citizenship Studies and International Studies Quarterly.
Research affiliations include membership in the International Studies Association, Law and Society Association, and Conflict Research Society. Her public-facing work has appeared in outlets like the New Humanitarian and Middle East Eye.
Her book Redefining Ceasefires: Wartime Order and Statebuilding in Syria (Cambridge University Press, 2023) synthesizes her interdisciplinary approach to conflict and governance.
