Katie Robertson is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Director of the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness at the Melbourne Law School. She also serves as Assistant Director of the Melbourne Law School Clinics and directs the Stateless Legal Clinic, established in 2021 with support from the Hiam Chalouhy Grant. Her work focuses on addressing unmet legal needs of stateless individuals, particularly children, through clinical legal education and strategic litigation.
With over 10 years of legal experience in human rights, public interest litigation, and community legal sectors, Robertson has worked internationally (e.g., Cambodia) and across Australia in roles including the Human Rights Law Centre and Aboriginal Legal Service. She co-chairs the Stateless Children Australia Network to advance knowledge and legal pathways for stateless children.
Her research interests center on statelessness, refugee rights, and innovative legal education models. Recent publications explore implementation of international conventions, legal needs of stateless populations, and advocacy strategies. Awards include the Hiam Chalouhy Grant supporting her Clinic’s work.
Advising and grants: Robertson’s grants include the Cameron Foundation’s Hiam Chalouhy Grant. She advises on policy matters through roles like Federal Senator advisor and Oxfam Australia policy work. The Stateless Legal Clinic she leads provides direct legal assistance to stateless children pursuing citizenship.
Labs/Teams: Directly oversees the Stateless Legal Clinic and collaborates with the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness to advance academic and practical solutions to statelessness issues.
