Dr. Thomas Appleby is an Associate Professor in Property Law at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment within the Faculty of Environment and Technology (FET). A non-practising solicitor qualified in England and Wales, he specializes in environmental law, marine law, fisheries law, and constitutional law. His research focuses on legal frameworks for marine conservation, post-Brexit fisheries governance, and sustainable resource management.
Tom leads the environment and sustainability initiatives at UWE's Centre for Architecture and Built Environment Research. He is also a member of the International Water Security Network, the Environmental Law Unit, and the UK Environmental Law Association. Beyond academia, he serves as chief legal affairs adviser to the Blue Marine Foundation, a UK-based ocean conservation charity. Previous professional experience includes commercial property law practice.
His expertise spans property law applications in marine contexts, EU environmental legislation, and legal mechanisms for resolving fisheries conflicts. Recent publications highlight critical analyses of post-Brexit fisheries policy, marine protected area enforcement via remote sensing, and legal pathways to sustainable marine resource management.
Tom holds a DPhil (doctorate), MA, and legal diplomas. His work bridges legal scholarship with practical policy advocacy, addressing challenges in coastal governance, marine biodiversity conservation, and equitable resource allocation.
