Dr. Bryce Stewart is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York. He is a marine ecologist and fisheries biologist with a focus on sustainable marine management, Brexit-related fisheries reforms, and climate change impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Stewart co-leads the Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry and Environment Programme within the School of Natural Sciences.
- Education: PhD in Marine Biology from James Cook University, Australia; BSc Hons in Zoology from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
His research explores three themes: (1) Marine Fisheries and Ecosystems, including MPAs and discard reduction; (2) Environmental Change effects on scallop populations and benthic communities; (3) Sustainable Seafood Movement effectiveness. Recent work analyzes how Brexit reshapes UK fisheries governance and promotes community-led marine conservation strategies.
While his publications span marine ecology, materials science, and policy analysis, Stewart actively engages in media outreach, appearing in BBC News, The Guardian, and Futurity. He supervises PhD students on topics like coral reef conservation, small-scale fisheries, and scallop dredging impacts.
Stewart contributes to grants such as the NERC-funded Pyramids of Life project and serves on advisory groups like the Clyde 2020 Research Advisory. He also reviews manuscripts for journals including Marine Ecology Progress Series and ICES Journal of Marine Science.
