Marija Sciberras is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University's Lyell Centre within the Global Research Institutes. She leads the Marine Evidence Synthesis research group, focusing on quantifying human impacts on marine ecosystems and informing sustainable management practices. Her roles include co-chairing the ICES Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT), evaluating trade-offs between environmental and food production goals.
Dr. Sciberras holds a PhD in Marine Ecology from Bangor University (2013) and has conducted research across international projects, including an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2018). She specializes in benthic ecology, fisheries sustainability, and evidence synthesis methodologies such as systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Her research interests span sustainable resource management, blue economy strategies, and marine conservation, with a focus on fishing impacts, aquaculture, pollution, and climate change adaptation. She has contributed to projects like the NERC-funded 'Impacts of Trawling on Seabed Carbon Storage' (£2.4M, 2023–2027) and the Fisheries Industry Science Partnership's 'Environmental Assessment of Scallop Innovation Gear' (£780K, 2023–2025).
Key achievements include the 2018 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and the 2025 SCOR Visiting Scholar appointment. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing life below water and climate action.
