Theaster Gates is a Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago. His interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, ceramics, architecture, music, performance, and urban development, rooted in a fusion of Japanese Mingei philosophy and Black cultural aesthetics. Gates coined the term "Afro-Mingei" to describe his conceptual framework blending the Japanese Mingei Movement with the "Black Is Beautiful" movement.

Research Interests: Gates explores cultural hybridity, reclaiming abandoned spaces, and redefining art and land values through a Black spatial lens. His work interrogates the intersection of African-American identity with Japanese craft traditions, often involving speculative projects that merge pragmatism with artistic innovation.
