Shadi Harouni is an Assistant Professor and Head of Photography and Video in the Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University’s Steinhardt School. She previously served as Director of Undergraduate Studies (2017–2023) and Acting Director at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2019). Her practice spans visual art, film, and photography, focusing on marginalized histories of dissent, particularly in Kurdish regions. Her work explores spaces like cemeteries, quarries, and abandoned industrial sites to interrogate themes of memory, resistance, and displacement.
Harouni’s exhibitions include Queens Museum (NY), Kunstmuseum Bonn (DE), and Prague City Museum (CZ), with publications in Artforum, The Guardian, and The New York Times. She has held residencies at Civitella Ranieri (IT), SOMA (MX), and the Ratti Foundation (IT).
