Ivan Forde (b. 1990) is a contemporary artist and Professor based in New York City, known for blending photography, printmaking, collage, sound performance, and installation. A 2012 BA graduate in Literature from Purchase College, SUNY, he reimagines epic poetry through interdisciplinary practices, focusing on themes like migration, memory, and cultural identity. His work has been exhibited at The Kitchen, The Jewish Museum, The Whitney Museum, and the Smithsonian National African American Museum of History and Culture.
Forde’s research engages with ancient texts such as Milton’s Paradise Lost and the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, using self-portraiture and cyanotype to deconstruct colonial legacies and reimagine narratives of belonging. His projects, like the scroll Black or Darker Impressions On A River Of Ocean (2019), synthesize drawing, painting, and photograms to visualize epic journeys through sea and sky.
His accolades include the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship (2017), Civitella Ranieri fellowship (2019), and residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Pioneer Works, and ACRE Projects Chicago. Forde’s work is held in collections at Syracuse University Art Museum, The Studio Museum, and the 7G Foundation.
