Terry B. Ewell is a Professor of Bassoon, Music Theory, and Online Education in the Department of Music at Towson University's College of Fine Arts and Communication. With over 40 years of professional experience, he has established himself as a distinguished performer, educator, scholar, and administrator in the field of music.
Dr. Ewell's research interests center on innovative approaches to bassoon pedagogy, particularly through digital media. He pioneered the application of MIDI, MP3, and online video for bassoon instruction, creating educational resources that have been viewed or downloaded over two million times worldwide. His work spans multiple languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, and Hungarian, demonstrating his commitment to global music education.
As an active performer, Dr. Ewell has held principal positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Wheeling Symphony, and West Virginia Symphony, and has performed with major orchestras including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and Seattle Symphony. He currently performs with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and Bach In Baltimore.
Dr. Ewell has made significant administrative contributions to music education, serving as Chair of the Department of Music at Towson University from 2000-2009 and as President of the International Double Reed Society. He was the first music faculty member to offer online courses at Towson University and continues to develop innovative digital learning materials through his 2reed.net platform.
