Teri Lynn Varner is a tenured Professor of Communication at St. Edward’s University’s School of Arts and Humanities. With a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin and over 15 years of teaching experience, she specializes in communication theory, nonverbal communication, public speaking, and active listening pedagogy. Her research focuses on metacognitive listening strategies in first-language contexts, hair/body politics, and representation of women of color in higher education.
- Education: Ph.D. in Communication (University of Texas at Austin, 2003), M.A. in Communication (Eastern Michigan University, 1996), B.S. in Communication (Eastern Michigan University, 1993).
Dr. Varner integrates performance studies into her scholarship, with expertise in oral interpretation, theatrical adaptation, and qualitative analysis. Her work emphasizes classroom-based listening strategies and multicultural awareness, particularly through initiatives like the C.R.O.W.N. Act advocacy.
As an active member of the National Communication Association (NCA) and International Listening Association (ILA), she has chaired panels, mentored doctoral students, and served on editorial boards. Her awards include multiple Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Advisor honors and a Technology for Innovative Learning grant.
She has delivered workshops on public speaking and active listening for organizations like Team Single Jingles and St. Edward’s University’s Multicultural Awareness Conference, addressing topics such as racial equality, gender equity, and socioeconomic issues.
