Teresa Degenhardt is a Senior Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast's School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, affiliated with the Mitchell Institute for Global Peace and the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She specializes in transnational criminology, focusing on state policies, migration detention, and the punitive aspects of military interventions. Her work bridges criminology, international relations, and feminist theory.
Education includes a Law Degree from the University of Bologna, MA in Criminology from Keele University, and PhD from Ulster University. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research interests include security technologies, AI in policing, and abolitionist frameworks for migration control. She has supervised PhD projects on AI-enabled security systems and facial recognition impacts.
Notable awards include the Emma Goldman Award (2023) and IWM Fellowship (2023). Her recent book War as Protection and Punishment was nominated for the British Society of Criminology Book Prize. She has held visiting roles at UC Berkeley, Hamburg Institute, and University of Turin.
Teaching includes Criminological Theory, Criminology Across Borders, and Algorithms and Society modules. Her work contributes to UN SDGs related to peace, justice, and inequality reduction.
