Teh-hui Kao is a Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Eberly College of Science. He holds roles in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, and the Plant Biology Program. His research focuses on self-incompatibility mechanisms in flowering plants, particularly in Petunia, exploring molecular and biochemical bases of self/non-self recognition.
Education: B.S. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University (197?), Ph.D. in Physical Biochemistry from Yale University (198?). Postdoctoral training at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and Cornell University. Joined Penn State in 1986, promoted to Full Professor in 1996, and named Distinguished Professor in 2013.
Research interests include S-locus genes (S-RNase and SLF proteins), ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis, and SCF complex function in pollen-pistil interactions. Key findings include identification of SLF proteins as pollen specificity determinants and the collaborative non-self recognition model. Current projects examine SCF complex dynamics and structural genomics of the S-locus.
Awards include the Penn State Faculty Scholar Medal (1995), AAAS Fellowship (2014), and multiple teaching awards. Active in departmental leadership, serving as Chair of the Plant Biology Program and on university-wide committees.
