Marcus Samuel is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, serving as Director of the Biological Sciences Greenhouse. His work focuses on plant reproductive biology, particularly the molecular mechanisms governing pollination and self-incompatibility in Brassicaceae species like canola and Arabidopsis. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Science from the University of British Columbia (2002) and degrees from Tamilnadu Agricultural University.
His research investigates how plants regulate pollen-pistil interactions to ensure compatible fertilization, with emphasis on signaling pathways involving receptor kinases, ubiquitin ligases, and reactive oxygen species. He explores applications to improve crop yields and stress tolerance, including drought-resistant wheat and oilseed traits. His lab also studies environmental stress effects, such as ozone pollution impacts on plant signaling.
Samuel’s courses include BIOL 371 (Comparative Biology of Plants and Animals) and PLBI 543 (Plant Signaling and Development). His work integrates proteomics, genomics, and CRISPR-Cas9 technologies to advance understanding of plant development and stress responses.
