Research Interests
Dr. Wheeler's primary research focuses on plant cell signalling mechanisms, including self-incompatibility in poppy and pollen tube polarity in tobacco. Current work investigates SPH protein functions in Arabidopsis thaliana and Physcomitrella patens for cell-cell communication. He pioneers eDNA techniques in conservation biology to assess invasive species impacts, while integrating nature engagement initiatives to address mental health through campus biodiversity projects.
Teaching and Leadership
As Learning and Teaching Co-ordinator and School Outreach Lead, he directs modules across Biology, Biochemistry, and Biomedical Science degrees. His educational innovations include bioinformatics resources for A-level students and Theatre in Education projects to boost science participation. He serves as External Examiner at Shrewsbury University Centre and University of Birmingham.
Research Affiliation
