Dr. Taryn Bashford is a Lecturer in the School of Communication and Arts at The University of Queensland, part of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Her academic and creative work focuses on trauma representation in young adult (YA) literature, magic realism, and diversity in storytelling. She holds a PhD from UQ, exploring how magic realism techniques can engage readers with traumatic narratives without sensationalism. Her creative output includes award-winning YA novels like The Harper Effect and The Astrid Notes, which examine themes of ambition, identity, and resilience in teens.
Education: Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) from the University of Exeter, UK, and a Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Queensland.
Research Interests: Creative practice, trauma theory, YA genres, and inclusive storytelling. She actively experiments with narrative techniques to depict trauma responsibly while fostering reader engagement.
She has received grants and fellowships, including recognition for her unpublished work Sassy Jam, and has spoken at literary conferences such as ACLAR in Perth. Taryn also conducts writing workshops through Queensland Writers Centre and serves as a mentor for emerging writers.
