Ron Bashford is a Professor in the Department of Theater and Dance at Amherst College, where he has directed over a dozen productions spanning classics, contemporary plays, musicals, and original collaborations with theater and dance majors. His distinguished career includes extensive professional work at renowned theaters across the United States including North Carolina Stage Company, Independent Shakespeare Company, Syracuse Stage, and venues in New York City such as Carnegie Hall and Joe's Pub.
Bashford's creative work as a director encompasses over one hundred productions across diverse genres, from traditional play scripts to original collaborations with actors, composers, and choreographers. His expertise spans Shakespearean works, modern classics, and innovative new pieces including a cappella pop operas and cabaret musicals. He has directed plays by major playwrights including Shakespeare, Caryl Churchill, Tom Stoppard, Sarah Ruhl, Samuel Beckett, and many others.
Professor Bashford teaches blended courses in acting and directing that emphasize the affective implications of script analysis alongside theatrical practice. He also instructs courses in the creative process and collaborative techniques, as well as a specialized course in the craft of speaking designed for both aspiring performers and liberal arts students seeking to improve their presence with others.
His productions have received significant critical acclaim, including a Los Angeles Times Critic's Choice designation for his Much Ado About Nothing and multiple regional awards for productions like Moonlight and Magnolias and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Bashford is currently developing a new opera, The Onion, in collaboration with composer Eric Sawyer, continuing his commitment to innovative theatrical creation.

Bashford has received numerous curated artist appointments at prestigious festivals including Toronto Fringe Festival, Ko Festival, and Independent Shakespeare Company. His work has been presented at major venues across North America, and he has served as a panelist at significant academic symposia including Smith College's The Scarlet Professor: Sex and Surveillance in America Symposium and Southwestern University's Brown Symposium on Shakespeare. His educational background includes an M.F.A. in acting from the University of Delaware's Professional Theater Training Program and a B.A. in music from Amherst College, supplemented by extensive training at Williamstown Theater Festival, National Shakespeare Conservatory, and with international theater companies.
