Tara S. Behrend is the John Richard Butler II Endowed Professor at the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, part of Michigan State University's College of Social Science. Her research focuses on workplace technologies, electronic surveillance ethics, human-AI systems, and workforce readiness. She holds a PhD and MS in Psychology from North Carolina State University and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.
Her expertise spans multidisciplinary work across psychology, education, and technology. She leads the Workplaces and Virtual Environments Lab, addressing technology's psychological and social impacts in workplaces. Behrend currently serves as SIOP President and previously chaired NSF's Future of Work working group. She is a Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and serves on the National Academies Board on Human-Systems Integration.
Her publications include four books: Research Methods for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (2024), The Future of Human-Technology Partnerships at Work (2024), Technology and Measurement Around the Globe (2023), and Workforce Readiness and The Future of Work (2019). These works emphasize ethical technology integration, global workforce trends, and methodological advancements in organizational research.
Behrend actively engages policymakers and global audiences on AI ethics, surveillance, and future employment strategies. Her NSF leadership included overseeing the Science of Organizations program, demonstrating commitment to advancing organizational science and workforce innovation.
