T.J. Dedeaux-Norris is an Associate Professor and Area Head of Painting and Drawing at the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History. They earned their BA from UCLA and MFA from Yale University. Their multidisciplinary art practice examines bodily experiences of racial, gender, and class socialization through painting, fiber, performance, video, and music.
Central research themes include:
- Interrogating boundaries between Self and Other
- Embodiment of social identity constructs
- Intersectional analysis of power structures
- Hybridization of artistic media
Dedeaux-Norris has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Nasher Museum of Art, Performa Biennial, Prospect New Orleans, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Walker Art Center. They have completed residencies at prestigious foundations including MacDowell, Skowhegan, Yaddo, and the University of Iowa's Grant Wood Colony.
Their creative research has been supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2019-2020) and recognized through the Iowa Artist Fellowship (2022).
