Angelina Gualdoni is a Professor of the Practice in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University. She holds an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work explores the interplay between visible and invisible forces through abstract painting techniques, incorporating textile patterns and historical references to women’s creative practices. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo/group shows at institutions like the Queens Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Neuberger Museum. Gualdoni co-founded the artist-run space Regina Rex (2010–2017) and is represented by Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York.
Research Interests: Gualdoni’s practice investigates domestic labor, textile design history, and the psychological dimensions of interior spaces. Her recent work connects plant medicine to healing processes, blending metaphysical and material concerns. She employs staining, pouring, and layered patterning to evoke tensions between control and chaos, visibility and obscurity.
Awards/Residencies: Recipient of Artadia, Pollock-Krasner, and NYFA grants; residencies at MacDowell, Skowhegan, and International Studio and Curatorial Program. Her work has been reviewed in New York Times, Art in America, and Huffington Post.
Teaching & Leadership: Teaches painting and drawing at SMFA, contributing to curricula that bridge traditional techniques with contemporary interdisciplinary practices. Her pedagogy emphasizes historical context and experimental material exploration.
