Professor Sylvio Mannel is affiliated with the University of Potsdam's Potsdam Research Center for Geosciences. He holds a PhD in Geoecology and has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research and teaching. His work focuses on integrating indigenous knowledge with geospatial technologies, particularly in collaboration with the Lakota Sioux community on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He founded the GIS department at Oglala Lakota College and led the 'Lakota Land' project, which combined cultural preservation with scientific methodologies. His efforts were recognized with the Burrill Prize in 2009. Post-2014, he continues research while maintaining ties to Lakota initiatives, including co-authoring educational coloring books about Lakota spiritual sites.
