Sylvie Mader is a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Medicine. She is also a Principal Investigator at the Institut de recherche en immunologie et en cancérologie (IRIC). Her research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of estrogen receptor (ER) signaling in breast cancer, particularly the role of anti-estrogens in tumor growth regulation and drug resistance. She leads projects exploring the interplay between hormonal and growth factor signaling pathways, with applications in developing targeted therapies.
Dr. Mader holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the University Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg) and completed postdoctoral training at McGill University. She has been at UdeM since 1995 and is a member of key research groups like IRIC and GRUM (Groupe de recherche universitaire sur le médicament). She teaches courses in molecular biology, cancer biology, and scientific communication.
Her research interests span transcriptional regulation, epigenetics, and drug development. She investigates how SUMOylation and other post-translational modifications modulate ER activity, and she develops hybrid drugs combining antiestrogens with histone deacetylase inhibitors. She has supervised over 50 students, contributing to advancements in breast cancer biology and therapy.
Dr. Mader has secured significant funding, including grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ). Her lab collaborates on projects involving metabolomics, drug design, and immunotherapy, aiming to translate findings into clinical applications.
She leads research units focused on molecular targeting in breast cancer therapy and participates in initiatives like the IRIC-IRCM doctoral program. Her work bridges basic science and clinical oncology, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to combat cancer.
