Professor Susan Pickard is a Professor of Sociology and former Head of the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Liverpool (2020–2024). She leads interdisciplinary research on aging, gender, ethnicity, and health, including a £1.1M ESRC-funded project on frailty among ethnic minorities and an MRC-funded study on menopause experiences of minority ethnic women. Her work bridges sociological theory, feminist analysis, and clinical practice, with global collaborations through an Academy of Medical Sciences grant (2025–2026). She directs the Centre for Ageing and the Life Course, fostering research on aging inequalities and cultural gerontology.
Her research interests include frailty, menopause, intersectional aging, and the application of Simone de Beauvoir’s philosophy to gender and aging studies. Notable publications include monographs like Age Studies (2016) and Age, Gender and Sexuality (2018), alongside edited volumes on aging and health disparities. She serves on editorial boards for the British Journal of Sociology and Ageing and Society, and holds a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship (2014).
Teaching focuses on sociological theory, qualitative methods, and aging studies, with courses like ‘Age Studies’ (SOCI254) and ‘Gender, the Body and Identity’ (SOCI315). Her work emphasizes policy impact, including clinical practice improvements and cultural competence tools for healthcare providers.
