Susan A Batchelor is a Senior Lecturer in Sociological & Cultural Studies at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR). Her work focuses on intersecting issues of gender, youth, culture, and crime, particularly young women’s experiences of violence and victimisation. She has led major studies like the Scottish Government-funded Repeat Violent Victimization (2019-2021) and co-directed the ESRC-funded (Re)Imagining Youth project comparing Glasgow and Hong Kong (2013-2015).
Her research emphasizes feminist methodologies and critical criminology, addressing topics such as youth leisure, gang dynamics, and systemic responses to violence. Key grants include British Academy/Leverhulme funding for 'Hidden Voices' (2022-2023) and leadership in over 15 research projects since 2001. She supervises PhD students in areas ranging from sectarianism to transgender practices, and teaches advanced criminological theory, qualitative methods, and gender-crime intersections.
Professionally, she sits on the editorial board of Criminology and Criminal Justice, reviews for top journals, and actively participates in policy discussions through SCCJR. Her recent work critiques punitive approaches to youth justice and advocates for marginalized voices in victimization research.
