Susan Comerford is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the Department of Social Work within the College of Education and Social Services. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University and an M.S.W. in Macro Social Work Practice from Fordham University.
Her research focuses on three interconnected areas: international issues (e.g., refugees, human rights), multicultural learning processes in a globalizing world, and leadership development in diverse contexts. Teaching expertise spans human rights, social policy, leadership theory, diversity, and workplace gender issues.
Dr. Comerford has received numerous awards, including the Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award (multiple nominations), the CUPS Lynn Bond Outstanding Faculty Award, and recognition for her advocacy work from organizations like the ALANA Student Center and UVM Women’s Center. Her work emphasizes equity, adult learning, and organizational development.
Her publications explore themes such as neurodiversity in education, cultural competency in human services, ethical leadership in rural communities, and LGBTQ+ aging narratives. She integrates experiential learning strategies to address diversity and social justice in both academic and community settings.
