Shirley Gedeon is an Emerita Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the Department of Economics within the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1982), an M.A. from the same institution (1976), and a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University (1973). Her expertise spans Post-Keynesian monetary theory, central banking, Eastern European economics, and pedagogical innovation in teaching.
Dr. Gedeon’s distinguished career includes Fulbright and IREX awards, as well as the George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award (1994) and the Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award (1998). She has served as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Comenius University (Bratislava, Slovakia) and holds an affiliation with the University of Sarajevo’s economics faculty. She was also an instructor at the Northern New England School of Banking (2000).
From 1997–2005, she founded and directed the UVM Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), overseeing programs like the Faculty Laptop Program, TechCATs Program, and the integration of the Digital Media Lab. Her research interests include central banking in transition economies, evidenced by a recent grant studying Bosnia and Herzegovina’s central banking systems.
