Susan C. Alberts is the Robert F. Durden Distinguished Professor of Biology at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She holds additional appointments in Evolutionary Anthropology and Marine Science and Conservation. Her research focuses on the evolution of social behavior in mammals, particularly wild baboons in Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem. Alberts has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1992), an M.A. from UCLA (1987), and a B.A. from Reed College (1983).
Her expertise includes primate social behavior, aging, genetics, ecology, and conservation. She leads the Alberts Lab, studying topics like gut microbiome dynamics, early-life adversity effects, and social determinants of health. Notable awards include the 2023 International Frontiers of Knowledge Award.
Recent grants include studies on stress responses, gene regulation, and microbiome aging in primates. Teaching includes research-focused courses in biology and evolutionary anthropology. Alberts collaborates widely, with affiliations to Duke’s Institute for Brain Sciences and Population Research Institute.
