Susan Backhouse is a Professor of Psychology and Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University, where she serves as the Director of Research for Sport and Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism, and as Head of the Centre for Human Performance. She graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc (Hons) in Physical Education and Sports Science, where she was awarded the Department prize for outstanding achievement, and completed her PhD at Loughborough University under the supervision of Professors Clyde Williams and Stuart Biddle.

Sue leads the sporting integrity research team at Leeds Beckett University, conducting research that addresses the complexity of doping in sport by investigating the issue from multiple stakeholder perspectives using an interdisciplinary lens. Her work focuses on implementation science, aiming to bring about change in the anti-doping system through the development of strong partnerships and evidence-informed interventions.
Her recent research projects include:
- RE>ACT - An intervention to prevent doping in sport through a Clean Sport Bystander Intervention
- CoachMADE - A program to prevent willingness to dope in adolescent sport
- RESPECT - A three-year international, collaborative, multi-agency project for anti-doping education
- FAIR - Forum for Anti-Doping in Recreational Sport
She is an active member of the clean sport community, serving on the WADA Social Science Research Committee, as Convenor of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science Clean Sport Interest Group, and as Co-Founder of the Clean Sport Alliance. Sue is regularly invited to give keynote lectures at international conferences.
Susan supervises postgraduate research students and contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Leeds Beckett University. Her research has been widely published in numerous academic journals, with over 144 publications to her name.
