Professor Ian Boardley is a Professor in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. He serves as Head of Impact & Engagement and Chair of the Health and Safety Committee in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. He has been a faculty member since 2008, progressing from Lecturer to Professor in 2022.

Professor Boardley’s research centers on psychosocial factors influencing moral behavior in sport and exercise, including prosocial and antisocial behaviors, doping, coaching efficacy, and social identity. His work employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies and is funded by WADA, IOC, EU, and ESRC. He has a strong focus on clean sport education and anti-doping initiatives.
His recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a consistent focus on doping behavior, anti-doping education (especially for para-athletes), athlete psychology, and the moral and social determinants of ethical conduct in sport. He frequently uses mixed methods, Delphi studies, and meta-analyses to explore barriers, enablers, and interventions in clean sport.

Professor Boardley supervises five doctoral researchers and one master’s student and welcomes new applicants. He leads the Interdisciplinary Research and Impact module and teaches on undergraduate modules related to moral behavior and doping. His leadership roles include heading impact and engagement initiatives within his school.
