Dr. Suraiyah Akbar is a Lecturer in Accounting at RMIT University's Department of Accounting, Information Systems & Supply Chain, based at City Campus Australia. She holds a PhD from RMIT in social and environmental accounting and reporting. Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Critical Accounting Perspectives, Strategic Management Control Systems, and Business Decision Making, with international experience across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Bangladesh.
Her research focuses on corporate accountability, social governance, and sustainability, particularly modern slavery and UN SDGs. Key research areas include SDG reporting frameworks, institutional factors influencing corporate social disclosures, and challenges in implementing social sustainability initiatives in industries like apparel. She has published widely on sustainability measurement, ESG reporting, and global development goals.
Dr. Akbar is actively involved in supervising Masters and PhD research projects on corporate responsibility and accountability. She contributes to RMIT's commitment to SDG 8 (Decent Work), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). Her work bridges academic research with practical industry challenges in ethical business practices and environmental stewardship.
