Sumaiya A. Hamdani is a faculty member at George Mason University in the Department of History, specializing in Islamic history, Middle Eastern studies, and global history. Her research intersects with Shi’i thought, women in Islam, and identity construction in Muslim minority communities during colonial and post-colonial periods. She has contributed to academic discourse through publications and has supervised doctoral dissertations on topics like the Almohad Caliphate and comparative mass education systems.
- Education: B.A. from Georgetown University, M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University.
Dr. Hamdani co-founded and directed the Islamic Studies program at George Mason University from 2003-2008. She has served on advisory boards for the Middle East Studies Association, the American Institute of Yemeni Studies, and the North American Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies. Her teaching spans Islamic, Middle Eastern, and world history.
