John M. Willis is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Director of the Honors Program. His research focuses on cultural and intellectual history of the modern Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and Yemen. He holds a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville, an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University, and a Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from New York University.
His research interests include state formation in Yemen, Islam and interwar internationalism, Islamic reformist thought, and Yemen’s socialist tradition. His publications include Unmaking North and South: Cartographies of the Yemeni Past (Columbia University Press, 2012) and two upcoming books: Cosmopolitanism in Translation: The Arabic Iqbal and the Future of the Islamic World and Meccan Variations: Islam and Politics After the Caliphate. His work has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, Fulbright, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, and the National Humanities Center.
Willis teaches courses on global history, Middle Eastern politics, and anti-colonial thought. He is a board member of the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI), emphasizing critical empathy in historical education to challenge imperial epistemologies.
