Dr. Miller’s scholarship examines Islamic media, theological discourse, and the interplay between religion and politics, particularly through his analysis of al-Qa`ida’s ideological foundations and Yemeni audiocassette poetry. His publications span journals like American Ethnologist and Journal of Religion and Violence, as well as influential books including The Audacious Ascetic (2015) and The Moral Resonance of Arab Media (2007). His work has earned prestigious fellowships from the National Humanities Center, ACLS, and Social Science Research Council.
Current projects explore Yemeni hunger strikes as secular critique and the racialized framing of 'radical Islam' in U.S. constitutional debates. He teaches courses on religion-language intersections, Islamic thought, and Middle Eastern cultural dynamics.
