Huseyin Yilmaz is an Associate Professor in History and Art History at George Mason University, specializing in Ottoman political thought and Middle Eastern history. His research examines constitutionalism, legitimacy, and cultural identity in the Ottoman Empire, with publications analyzing mystical influences on governance and freedom concepts.
His seminal work 'Caliphate Redefined' explores Sufi impacts on Ottoman political ideology. Recent studies investigate ethics of governance and consultative traditions. As Research Director for the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies, he promotes interdisciplinary research on Muslim societies.
Teaching includes Ottoman Empire history and Islamic intellectual traditions. His publications reveal persistent themes: adaptation of Persianate political concepts, translation of knowledge, and premodern constitutional mechanisms.
