Sue William Silverman is an award-winning memoirist, essayist, and poet who serves as co-chair of the MFA in Writing Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. With eight published books spanning creative nonfiction, memoir, poetry, and writing craft, she has established herself as a significant voice in contemporary literature, particularly in the realm of confessional writing.
Her research and creative interests focus on creative nonfiction, memoir writing, confessional writing, Jewish identity studies, trauma narrative, addiction studies, and death and dying. Silverman's work consistently explores deeply personal themes including sexual addiction, childhood trauma, Jewish identity in a Christian-dominated culture, and the fear of death, often employing innovative narrative techniques and blending genres.
Silverman's publications demonstrate a progression from exploring trauma in Because I Remember Terror, Father, I Remember You to examining sexual addiction in Love Sick, then moving to questions of identity in The Pat Boone Fan Club, and finally confronting mortality in How to Survive Death and Other Inconveniences. Her most recent work Selected Misdemeanors employs flash and micro essay forms to examine pivotal life moments with surgical precision.
