Susan Tekulve serves as Associate Professor of English in the Department of Art, Design & Letters at Converse University's School of the Arts, where she teaches in both BFA and MFA writing programs and has led creative writing study abroad courses in Italy.
Her research centers on creative writing with emphases in fiction, nonfiction, and contemporary literary forms. She explores Southern American experiences through personal narratives, war histories, and family dynamics, producing works that bridge memoir and literary fiction while maintaining strong connections to regional identity and women's perspectives.
Her publications reveal consistent thematic focus on Southern settings and intergenerational trauma, evolving from early short story collections like "My Mother’s War Stories" to mature essay forms in "Second Shift". This trajectory demonstrates deepening engagement with nonfiction while retaining the vivid character work of her fiction.
Dr. Tekulve's honors include:
- 2012 South Carolina First Novel Prize for "In the Garden of Stone"
- 2014 Gold IPPY Award for "In the Garden of Stone"
- 2004 Winnow Press fiction prize for "My Mother’s War Stories"
- 2004 Kathryn Amelia Brown Teaching Award
- Sewanee Writers’ Conference scholarship
- Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference scholarship
She actively mentors emerging writers through Converse's degree programs and international workshops, with her conference scholarships reflecting ongoing professional development in literary craft. Though specific grant funding isn't documented, her sustained publication record and teaching awards indicate robust institutional support for her creative scholarship.
