Sue Fenton is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University (NC State) and serves as Director of the Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE). Previously, she led the Reproductive Endocrinology group at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) for 14 years and spent 11 years at the US EPA’s Reproductive Toxicology Division. Her research focuses on developmental toxicology, particularly the effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on mammary gland development and placental/breast milk exposures.
Education: PhD and MS in Endocrinology/Reproductive Physiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Postdoctoral fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Research interests emphasize windows of sensitivity to chemical exposures, life-course impacts of endocrine disruptors, and translational toxicology. Active in professional societies including SOT, US DOHaD, and the Society for Birth Defects Research & Prevention. Served as Associate Editor for Environmental Health Perspectives since 2017.
Awards include EPA mentoring honors and NIH recognition for PFAS/endocrine disruptor research. Leads the NIEHS-funded PFAS Superfund Research Center and the CHHE P30 Center.
