Sue Ashford is the Michael & Susan Jandernoa Professor of Management and Organizations at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. She previously served as Senior Associate Dean (1998–2002), Associate Dean for Leadership Development (2007–2010), and faculty director of the Executive MBA program (2002–2012). Her academic focus is on leadership development, proactivity, job insecurity, and the gig economy.
Education: PhD and MS from Northwestern University (1983, 1981), BA from San Jose State University (1977).
Research interests emphasize leveraging proactivity for organizational effectiveness, leadership identity formation, and adapting to workplace uncertainties. She has contributed to top journals like the Academy of Management Journal and Strategic Management Journal, and her work has been featured in the Harvard Business Review and New York Times.
Awards include the Academy of Management’s Career Achievement Award (2017), Lifetime Achievement Award (2020), and the Ross School’s Researcher of the Year (2020). She teaches negotiation and leadership in executive programs, including the Emerging Leaders Program and gender-focused initiatives like the Ascending to the C-suite program.
