Steve Paton is a Senior Lecturer in Operations and Project Management within the Department of Management Science at Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde. He joined the university in 2005 after a distinguished career in the aerospace industry, where he held senior roles in manufacturing, operations, and project management. He currently serves as Director of Teaching and Learning in the Department of Strategy and Organisation, leading educational initiatives and delivering modules in Operations Management and Project Management across postgraduate, MBA, and executive education programs.
His educational background includes a PhD in Management of Knowledge Workers and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). These qualifications underpin his academic and practical expertise.
Steve's research centers on how organizations manage complex work through project management methodologies (projectification) and high-value operational strategies, particularly in engineering and manufacturing sectors. He investigates how firms transition up the value chain and adopt innovative business models, often through project-based organizational structures. His work emphasizes linking theory with practice to deliver actionable insights for industry.
The recent publications highlight a strong focus on co-opetition dynamics, system dynamics modeling, knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs), and business model innovation in manufacturing ecosystems. These works span disciplines such as operations management, strategic management, and sustainability, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach that integrates fuzzy logic, causal loop diagrams, and action research methodologies.
His scientific recognition includes the Influential Research award received on February 1, 2018, acknowledging the impact of his scholarly contributions.
Steve actively supervises research students with interests in high-value manufacturing and project-based organizations. He is deeply involved in knowledge transfer, leading and contributing to multiple KTP projects and consultancy engagements with industry partners such as Fix Visual Effects Limited, Leonardo, JWF Process Solutions Ltd, and Scottish Power. These projects focus on operational efficiency, business model transformation, and strategic capability development.
He leads and contributes to research labs and collaborative teams focused on manufacturing ecosystems, operational improvement, and innovation. His work is embedded in real-world applications, often involving cross-disciplinary teams from engineering, management, and business, particularly in initiatives related to space technology, defence, and sustainable manufacturing.
