Jose Luis Hernandez is a Research Fellow at the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He serves as the Knowledge Exchange (KE) & Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Coordinator for DMEM and is also a Senior Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the Manufacturing Skills Academy.
His research expertise focuses on Operational Excellence methodologies with particular emphasis on Product Development, Product Optimisation, Lean Design, Lean Manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma, and Design for Six Sigma. Hernandez has developed significant expertise in applying Six Sigma methodology across diverse contexts including manufacturing processes, healthcare settings, and small enterprise innovation, with his work contributing to sustainable business practices and operational improvements across multiple industries.
Hernandez's publications from 2007-2018 demonstrate consistent application of quality improvement principles to solve real-world problems across multiple sectors, from nickel superalloy manufacturing to healthcare operations. His research shows a strong practical orientation with direct industrial applications.

He has been actively involved in numerous professional activities including organizing the KTP Workshop in 2018, serving as an invited speaker on 'Introduction to Lean, Six Sigma and LSS' in 2014, and organizing multiple international conferences. Hernandez currently leads several knowledge exchange projects including MSA-DIRF-07140 and MSA-DIRF-07139 (2024-2025), and serves as Research Co-investigator on the ReMake Value Retention Centre project (2024-2028).
As coordinator of the University of Strathclyde Lean Six Sigma Programme, Hernandez bridges academic research with industrial applications, facilitating knowledge transfer between the university and manufacturing sector organizations.
