Dr. Stephen Withnell serves as a Junior Research Fellow in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Oxford, where he completed his DPhil in Architectural History. His academic foundation includes undergraduate studies in History at Durham University and graduate work in the History of Art & Architecture at the University of London, complemented by leadership training through INSEAD's International Directors Programme.
Withnell's research spans British and European art and architecture from the early modern period through the twentieth century, with specialized expertise in Catholic material culture. His current investigations focus on nineteenth-century Catholic church-building in Northern England and Jesuit architectural practices during the Victorian era, revealing intersections between religious identity and built environments. His scholarly contributions appear in specialized publications including Rewley House Studies in the Historic Environment, the Georgian Group Journal, and the Oxford Review of Books.
Beyond academic research, Withnell actively engages with cultural institutions as a Trustee of the London Library, contributing to the preservation and accessibility of historical knowledge through governance and strategic oversight.
