Dr Julian Holder is a Tutor in Architectural History at Rewley House, Department for Continuing Education, University of Oxford. His career spans academia and conservation, with significant roles including Director of the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (2000-2010), Inspector of Historic Buildings at English Heritage (1990s-2000), and early conservation work with the Twentieth Century Society, where he famously preserved Bankside Power Station (now Tate Modern) in 1992.
- Education: Postgraduate work in architectural history at University College London; trained as a librarian at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).
His research focuses on the architecture and design of the last 200 years, particularly the Neo-Georgian and Arts and Crafts Movements. He co-edited the 2019 publication Neo-Georgian architecture; a reappraisal, 1880-1970 and authored the 2020 book Beauty’s awakening on the Arts and Crafts Movement. Holder is Deputy Editor of Architectural History and founded the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain’s annual PhD Workshop and grants programme.
Holder serves on advisory bodies such as CADW, the Victorian Society’s Northern Buildings Committee, and the Getty Conservation Institute’s Expert Advisory Panel on twentieth-century heritage. His work bridges academic scholarship and practical preservation, emphasizing the cultural significance of post-war architecture.
