Bill Mander is a Professor of History of Modern Philosophy and Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford. His expertise spans Early Modern Philosophy, British Idealism, and Philosophy of Religion. Mander holds a BPhil and DPhil from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and a BA from University College London.
His research focuses on 19th-century British metaphysics, particularly British Idealism, and early modern thinkers like Descartes, Spinoza, and Berkeley. He explores themes such as pantheism, the nature of evil, and metaphysical systems. His publications include The Unknowable; A Study in Nineteenth-Century British Metaphysics (2020) and edited volumes like The Oxford Handbook of British Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century (2014).
Mander teaches undergraduate courses on Descartes, Spinoza, Schopenhauer, and Mill’s Utilitarianism, and leads a graduate pro-seminar in the History of Philosophy. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary philosophical debates, emphasizing idealist ethics and the interplay between metaphysics and theology.
