Stephen Nordstrom is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), College of Liberal Arts, where he serves as String Area Coordinator and teaches violin, viola, music history, aural skills, and music fundamentals. He joined UTEP in 2014 and assists with the UTEP Symphony Orchestra. Prior teaching roles include Indiana University East, Earlham College, and summer faculties at Interlochen Arts Camp and Camp Encore/Coda.
Dr. Nordstrom’s research and teaching focus on string pedagogy, music education, historical performance practices, chamber music, and orchestral conducting. He is particularly interested in learning and behavioral styles in music instruction and integrates both modern and historical pedagogical methods. His performance expertise spans violin and viola, with active involvement in orchestral and chamber music settings across the U.S. and internationally.
He is an active performer, currently serving as Acting Principal Second Violin of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and performing with the Las Cruces Symphony. He has toured and performed in Italy, Austria, China, Canada, and Mexico, and recently released a CD titled A Musical Portrait of the American Southwest with composer Dominic Dousa, presenting recitals across the Southwest and in Juarez, Mexico.

Dr. Nordstrom advises students in string performance and pedagogy and is involved in community outreach through the Borderland Chopin Festival, UTEP Children's Choir, and Collegium Musicum. He has not received mention of formal grants, but his collaborative research and performance projects indicate ongoing scholarly activity. He is also involved with the Center for Arts Entrepreneurship and various music outreach initiatives.
He performs and teaches in multiple international settings and maintains strong ties with global music institutions through performance and summer programs. His lab or ensemble work includes chamber music groups, orchestral leadership, and collaborative piano projects.
