Stephen J. Moss is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Tufts University School of Medicine, supported by the Tufts Endowed Research Fund for Neuroscience. He co-directs the AstraZeneca/Tufts Laboratory for Basic and Translational Neuroscience Research (established 2013). His research focuses on GABA receptor regulation and its role in neuropsychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. He holds a PhD from the University of London (1989) and a BSc from the University of Bath (1984).
Key research interests include GABA receptor trafficking, neuroactive steroids' effects on inhibition, and mechanisms underlying seizure susceptibility. Recent work emphasizes KCC2 transporter regulation and therapeutic strategies for refractory epilepsy. Moss has held editorial roles at journals like Neuropharmacology and Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, and serves on advisory boards for pharmaceutical companies like Sage Therapeutics.
Major grants include NIH-funded studies on GABA receptor structure/function and KCC2's role in autism. Teaching focuses on neurochemistry and receptor mechanisms. Over 300 publications highlight contributions to neurotransmitter signaling, with recent emphasis on neurosteroid pharmacology and synaptic plasticity.
