Werner Sieghart is an internationally acknowledged Austrian neuroscientist holding the position of University Professor. He has made significant contributions to our understanding of GABA A receptors, including their structure, pharmacology, distribution, and function in the brain.
Professor Sieghart's research focuses on GABA A receptors, which are the major inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors in the brain. His work has elucidated how these receptors serve as the site of action for clinically important compounds including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, neuroactive steroids, and anesthetics. His research demonstrates that GABA A receptors regulate critical brain functions such as anxiety, sleep, cognition, muscle activity, and memory, while also modulating conditions including depression, neuropathic pain, schizophrenia, and recovery from stroke.
Professor Sieghart belongs to the most highly cited scientists in his field of research as well as in Austrian neuroscience, reflecting the significant impact of his work on the scientific community. He maintains an ORCID identifier (http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0443-0302) and research ID A-4877-2013 for tracking his scholarly contributions.
