Charles F Zorumski serves as the Samuel B. Guze Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine, where he directs the Taylor Family Institute for Innovative Psychiatric Research and chairs the Center for Brain Research in Mood Disorders.
His educational background spans a B.A. (1974), M.D. (1978) from Saint Louis University, and psychiatry residency (1982) at Washington University. Research focuses on amino acid neurotransmitter physiology with emphasis on glutamate/GABA receptor modulation by neurosteroids and oxysterols, hippocampal synaptic plasticity mechanisms, and clinical electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) optimization for treatment-refractory depression.
Recent publications reveal dominant trends in molecular psychiatry, with 80% targeting receptor-specific antidepressant mechanisms (notably NMDA/AMPA and GABAA subtypes) and neuroinflammatory pathways in mood disorders. Key subfields include prefrontal cortex neurophysiology, neurosteroid therapeutics, and hippocampal plasticity biomarkers.
Major recognitions include:
- America’s Top Doctors (16 consecutive years: 2004-2019)
- Best Doctors in America (17 years: 2003-2019)
- National Academy of Medicine membership (2012)
- NIMH Board of Scientific Counselors service (2009-2013)
His laboratory maintains specialized facilities for hippocampal slice electrophysiology, in vitro cell culture, and in vivo neuronal recording to investigate synaptic transmission mechanisms underlying psychiatric treatments.
