Jamie Maguire is the Kenneth and JoAnn G Wellner Professor at the Department of Neuroscience, Tufts University School of Medicine, where they have been a faculty member since 2010. Their research focuses on neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, particularly epilepsy, mood disorders, and HPA axis regulation, using systems physiology approaches spanning synaptic changes to circuit dysfunction.
- Education: PhD in Neuroscience from George Washington University (2003), BS/BA in Psychology and Biological Sciences from University of Pittsburgh (1998)
Current research explores neurosteroid-mediated mechanisms in postpartum depression, leading to collaborations with SAGE Therapeutics and development of mouse models. Their lab also investigates HPA axis dysfunction as a novel contributor to epilepsy progression and SUDEP risk, funded by two NIH RO1 grants. Methodologies include GABAergic signaling analysis, optogenetics, and machine learning-based seizure detection (e.g., SeizyML software).
Key article trends from 2023-2025 reveal expertise in amygdala circuitry, interneuron function, and neuroendocrine-immune interactions. Publications span topics like neurosteroid therapeutics, stress-induced network changes, and targeted inhibition strategies for neuropsychiatric conditions.
Jamie actively teaches graduate courses including Graduate Cell Biology, Neurosci Lab Techniques, and Advanced Scientific Ethics. They lead the BUILD Program's diversity initiative and serve on multiple university committees. Collaborations include institutions like Brandeis University, Pennsylvania State University, and Tufts Medical Center.
