Stephen Johnstone is a Professor in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His collaborative practice with Graham Ellard since 1993 explores intersections between architecture, film, and immersive spatial experiences. Their work transforms architectural spaces into dynamic environments where projected imagery creates performative spectatorship.
- Education: PhD from Middlesex Polytechnic (1994), MPhil (1991) with British Academy funding, BA (1986), and Cert Ed Fine Art from Goldsmiths (1982)
Research focuses on pre-cinematic spectacle, abstract film, and architectural space representation in cinematic contexts. Recent works include the 2025 Wall of Death/Geneva Express vinyl installation and 2022 Pattern 16mm film, exploring material text practices and geometric abstraction respectively.
Projects have received funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and various UK arts councils. Exhibitions span global institutions from the Photographer's Gallery (London) to Museum of Contemporary Art (Australia) across diverse formats including film, performance, and curated exhibitions.
As an academic, he has contributed critical writings on Baudrillard's theories, Walter Benjamin's media concepts, and collaborative practices in edited volumes. His 2015 publication Anthony McCall: Notebooks and Conversations provides significant context to experimental film practices.
